What is a bag glove?

Bag gloves are specifically designed for training on punching bags and pads. They are more compact and lighter than regular boxing gloves and often have a more open design, making them easier to put on and take off and allowing for greater sensitivity when punching.

Difference with boxing gloves

  • Weight & size:Bag gloves are lighter and more compact, ideal for speed and volume rounds.
  • Model:often an open thumb/palm for ventilation and quick donning and doffing.
  • Padding:Focused on the knuckles for direct punch feedback; less total cushioning than 12–16 oz boxing gloves.
  • Wrist rest:Usually slightly less stiff than heavier boxing gloves; good taping or wearing inner gloves with a bandage remains advisable.

NB:Bag gloves are not intended for sparring. For sparring, use (kick)boxing gloves with sufficient oz padding.

Which bag gloves do I need?

Size & fit

Bag gloves typically come in standard sizes: XS, S, M, L, and XL. Choose a size that fits snugly but comfortably, ensuring your knuckles rest properly on the padding and the glove doesn't twist. Always wear hand wraps or liners for hygiene and extra support.

Choice of materials

  • Artificial leather (PU):competitively priced, easy to maintain, ideal for beginners and recreational users.
  • Genuine leather:More durable and conforms to your hand; interesting for higher training frequencies.

Training level

  • Beginner:Still training your technique? Consider 12–16 oz boxing gloves for extra protection on the bag. Then, switch to bag gloves for speed/volume.
  • Advanced:Bag gloves provide maximum feedback and speed for combinations and interval sets.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Maintenance:Air out after each session; use an antibacterial spray if necessary. You can wash inner gloves at 30°C.
  • Oz measurements comparison:oz applies to boxing gloves (8–20 oz). Higher oz = more padding and protection, but heavier and less maneuverable; lower oz = lighter with less cushioning.
