Training without a mouthguard means taking unnecessary risks. In contact and combat sports such as boxing, kickboxing, and MMA, blows to the jaw are not an exception but part of the sport. A good mouthguard not only prevents broken teeth or lip injuries but also reduces the chance of jaw fractures and concussions by absorbing and distributing impact.

Types of mouthguards: Which type suits your sport?

The choice of mouthguard depends on your training intensity and the discipline you practice.

1. Kickboxing and boxing mouthguards

In (kick)boxing, a mouthguard must fit securely during fast combinations and heavy sparring. Most fighters use a single mouthguard (only for the upper jaw). This offers sufficient protection and makes breathing easier. For heavy contact, models with extra impact ridges around the front teeth are recommended.

2. MMA mouthguards

MMA places different demands. During groundwork, clinching, and grappling, you must be able to breathe and communicate well. MMA mouthguards often have a more compact design. They fit tightly around the upper jaw so they stay perfectly in place even during throwing and wrestling scenarios.

3. Mouthguards for brace wearers

Do you wear braces? Then specifically choose a model designed for this (such as from the brand SafeJawz). These mouthguards for braces are wider and prevent the material from sticking to the braces or damaging your gums.

Material: Silicone vs. Gel

  • Silicone mouthguards:Sturdy, durable, and budget-friendly. Ideal for beginners or as reliable basic protection.
  • Gel mouthguards:These have a softer core that conforms more precisely to your teeth. They offer higher wearing comfort and superior shock absorption.
  • Dental Warranty:Many premium brands (such as Venum mouthguards) offer a dental warranty. This is an insurance from the manufacturer that compensates for dental damage up to a certain amount.

How to custom fit a mouthguard? (Boil & Bite)

Most mouthguards in our assortment are boil & bitemodels. Follow these steps for a perfect fit:

  1. Heat:Submerge the mouthguard in hot (not boiling!) water for about 75 seconds.
  2. Cool:Take it out and let it cool briefly so you don't burn your mouth.
  3. Form:Place the mouthguard in your mouth, bite down firmly, and press with your fingers from front to back against your teeth and gums. Suck out the air to create a vacuum.
  4. Harden:Then place the mouthguard in cold water to fix the shape.

Tip:A well-fitting mouthguard will stay on your upper jaw when you open your mouth, without you having to bite down on it. Always read the specific instructions from the brand for exact times.

Tips for the aspiring fighter

In your first lessons, a mouthguard is often immediately mandatory. You can often borrow boxing glovesat the gym initially, but a mouthguard is strictly personal and hygienic. So always purchase your own, new mouthguard.
