Choosing the right MMA gloves can be tricky due to the sheer number of options available. Below, you'll find a clear guide to help you quickly choose the perfect MMA gloves.

How do you find the right size?

Unlike boxing gloves, MMA gloves don't rely on body weight. You determine the size based on hand circumference.

  1. Measure just below your knuckles (without your thumb) using a measuring tape.
  2. Note the circumference in centimeters.
  3. Use the guideline below and always check the size chart for your specific model/brand.
  • 16–18 cm:S
  • 19–21 cm:M
  • 22+ cm:L/XL

NB:Sizes may vary by brand. Always consult the size chart on the product page.

Leather or faux leather?

Leather MMA gloves

  • Durable:lasts longer with proper maintenance.
  • Breathable:ventilates better than artificial leather.
  • Comfort:conforms to your hand for a natural fit.
  • Appearance:luxurious finish and premium feel.

Negative point:higher in price than imitation leather.

Faux leather MMA gloves

  • Affordable:competitive pricing, ideal as an entry-level product.
  • Easy to maintain:more resistant to moisture.
  • Vegan:animal-friendly alternative.
  • Large selection:many models and colors available.

Negative point:less durable with intensive use than genuine leather.

Grappling vs. sparring gloves

Grappling MMA gloves

Recognizable by their half-finger design and thinner padding. Designed for grip and control.

  • MMA grappling training with controlled punches (focus on groundwork).
  • Light sparring with emphasis on technique and flow.
  • MMA competitions typically use the grappling variant.

NB:Less padding = more finger freedom, but less protection for you and your training partner. For hard sparring, it's best to use sparring gloves.

Sparring MMA gloves

Thickly padded knuckle area and pre-curved (curved) fingers to prevent eye contact. Specifically designed for more intense sparring sessions.

  • More protection for the hands in case of impact.
  • Reduces cuts/scratches to your sparring partner.

Can I use MMA gloves on the punching bag?

In theory, it's possible, but it's not recommended. MMA gloves offer little thumb protection, making it easier to miss a target. For bag training, we recommendregular boxing gloveswith thumb protection and thicker padding.

Maintenance: How to keep your MMA gloves fresh

  • Remove them from your bag immediately after training and let them dry in an open space.
  • Use an antibacterial spray to reduce odor formation.
  • Considerdeodorizeror moisture-absorbing inserts between sessions.

Once they're saturated with odor, it's difficult to completely remove. Regular ventilation prevents the problem.
