Choosing the right MMA gloves can be challenging due to the wide range of options. Below you'll find a clear guide to help you quickly select the perfect MMA gloves.

How to find the right size?

Unlike boxing gloves, MMA gloves are not sized by body weight. You determine the size based on hand circumference.

  1. Measure with a tape measure just below your knuckles (excluding your thumb).
  2. Note the circumference in centimeters.
  3. Use the guideline below and always check the size chart for the specific model/brand.
  • 16–18 cm:S
  • 19–21 cm:M
  • 22+ cm:L/XL

Leather or synthetic leather?

Leather MMA gloves

Grappling vs. sparring gloves

Grappling MMA gloves

Recognizable by half fingers and thinner padding. Designed for grip and control.

  • MMA grappling training with controlled strikes (focus on groundwork).
  • Light sparring with emphasis on technique and flow.
  • MMA competitions (competitive) typically use the grappling variant.

Please note:less padding = more finger freedom, but less protection for you and your training partner. For hard sparring, it's better to use sparring gloves.

Sparring MMA gloves

Thickly padded knuckle zone and pre-curved (bent) fingers to prevent eye contact. Specifically for more intense sparring sessions.

  • More hand protection during strikes.
  • Reduces cuts/scratches for your sparring partner.

Can I use MMA gloves on the punch bag?

In theory, yes, but it is not recommended. MMA gloves offer little thumb protection, increasing the risk of improper striking. For bag training, we recommend regular boxing gloveswith thumb protection and thicker padding.

Maintenance: how to keep your MMA gloves fresh

  • Remove them from your bag immediately after training and let them air dry in an open space.
  • Use an antibacterial spray to limit odor formation.
  • Consider deodorizersor moisture-absorbing inserts between sessions.

Once they are saturated with odor, it is difficult to remove completely. Consistent ventilation prevents the problem.
