What head protection do I need for boxing, kickboxing and MMA?
The choice of head protectors is wide: from open models with a clear field of vision to variants with cheekbone and nose bridge protection.
The best choice depends on your sport, training intensity and personal preference.
Below you will find a compact guide to help you quickly make the right choice.
Quickly select by sport
Boxing (sparring):choosecheekbone protectionfor extra cushioning; for hard sparring, possibly withbridge of the nose.
Kickboxing / Muay Thai:cheekbone protectionwith good side padding; light and stable model for good visibility.
MMA:generallyopen facefor maximum visibility and clinching/grappling; light, close-fitting.
Types of head protectors
Open face (clear field of view):Light and agile. Less cushioning in the face – ideal for approaching competition.
With cheekbone protection:Extra padding around the cheekbones and sides of the face. Slightly limited vision, but convenient for regular sparring rounds.
With nose bridge (bar):Maximum protection for the nose, suitable for intense sparring. It limits visibility but prevents injuries.
Training or competition?
If you want to keep your training as competition-realistic as possible, choose aopen model without cheekbone protection.
If you are looking for comfort and less impact in the gym, thencheekbone protectionthe safe middle ground.
Size & fit
Circumference:Measure around the head (above eyebrows/ears) and compare with the product size chart.
Closure:a strong velcro closure prevents slipping during combinations and clinches.
Padding:More padding provides more cushioning, but can be heavier and limit visibility.
Sight lines:Test whether you have a good view downwards and to the sides – important for kicks and counters.
Important:a head protector preventsnoconcussion.
It protects against cuts, scrapes, and bone impacts, but not against brain damage from shock.
Maintenance & replacement
Let your head guard dry thoroughly after training; don't store it damp in your bag.
Replace on average every1–2 years, depending on use and wear of the foam or upholstery.
A model withcheekbone protectionoffers a good balance between safety and comfort during the first training sessions.
Can I use the same headguard for sparring and competition?
Better not. For competitions you usually use aopen modelfor better visibility, for training a model with extra cushioning.
What is the difference between with and without cheekbone protection?
With cheekbone protection = more protection, less visibility. Without = clear field of vision, less facial obstruction.
Are more expensive headguards always better?
Not always. The quality of material, fit, and finish makes the difference – not just the price.
How often should I replace my head protector?
On average every1 to 2 years, depending on frequency of use and sweat load.
